When The Beat Drops

When The Beat Drops

Using fluorescent paint on a 30 cm x 30 cm square wood panel, "When the Beat Drops" expresses the rhythm of the night. Loose splatters of green against highly contrasted black and white stripes creates a sense of movement and structured chaos. It is vibrant and colorful just like the music.

Cycles of Nature

Cycles of Nature

Representing the ebb and flow of energies naturally occuring, "Cycles of Nature" contrasts loose splashes of greens and whites against grid-like, linear lines of turquoise and at the base, gold. It is similar to the ocean, never ending in motion.

Refracted Light

Refracted Light

"Refracted Light" is a 30 cm x 30 cm is an abstract representation of light dancing its way through a prism, or chandelier of prisms. The colors reflect the boldness of a sunset and the playfulness of a rainbow. Painted in early 2020.

Narcissus

Narcissus

Mirrors have been used as fascinating emblems to explore perception and truths of reality. Reflecting almost perfect light, they show us a world both familiar and inexplicably different. Haunting in its honesty, this reflected world becomes an interactive tool that brings the viewer into the living art piece, if only temporarily. For some, the mirror acts as a way in which to fall in love with yourself, a radical proclamation of happiness through recognition. Narcissus explores the evolution of self perception, impacted by internal dialogue and uncontrollable external circumstances. It is said that the mythological figure Narcissus would have a long life, provided he never recognized himself but fell in love with his own reflection and pined away. The term narcissism denotes an excessive degree of self-esteem characterized by an addiction to fantasy, an unusual coolness and composure shaken only when confidence is threatened, and by the tendency to take others for granted or to exploit them. There is a fine line between reality and disorder but is self love and self value really so radical?

Rabbit Hole

Rabbit Hole

The journey to wonderland is curious and uncertain and promises trials and tribulations, however, the adventure into the unknown parts of the psyche can be colorful and vibrant. Painted in Florescent Acrylic, "The Rabbit Hole" becomes an entirely different experience when illuminated by blacklight - a hidden layer beneath the surface - in the same way that noticing negative feelings and delving into the shadows can provide insight into our most authentic selves.

"Substance"

"Substance"

Through action painting and focus on process, "Substance" showcases layers of varying texture comparative to life itself. While some experiences may not be the smoothest, the cumulative experience is balanced and vibrant with lights and darks.

Del Sol

Del Sol

"Del Sol" plays with passionate reds and curious yellows - the promise of golden treasures broken by royal blue to play it cool. A traditionally symbolic masculine force, Darby Leondra tinkers with femxle identity. The balance of warm and cool colors defines and shines through Del Sol, bringing the audience’s own associations with femininity and light.

Summer Trips

Summer Trips

Summer Trips uses a high contrast of colors to portray the vivaciousness of a summer night, staying up too late with good company and getting into a little trouble. This design brings the color and warmth of an august midnight into your heart.

Don't Call Me Baby

Don't Call Me Baby

"Don't Call Me Baby" Using bold black lines juxtaposed to soft pastels, this painting exudes individuality and confidence. "Don't Call Me Baby" overcomes societal 'expectations' and norms. Nobody calls you baby when you're sitting on the throne.

Let it Bubble

Let it Bubble

"Let it Bubble" explores how cool and warm colors create context and influence emotion. Let it bubble acts as contradiction to traditional associations of emotion and color, while hues of cool purple and blue combine to create a sense of comfort and relaxation instead of coldness and isolation. Cheery marks juxtapose an underlying layer of black expressing depth. Bubbles can bring up only so much treasure from the bottom of a seemingly endless pool. How deep are you willing to dive? Bubble earned the Bright Spirits Finalist Award in May 2020 for addressing emotional health and positivity during a precarious global crisis.

My Eyes Are Up Here

My Eyes Are Up Here

"My Eyes Are Up Here" embodies a western beauty standard, and then brings it crashing down around her with aloofness and resilience. Dressed only in long pearl earrings, the femxle’s status remains calm and elegant in confining surroundings, expressing “I can be naked and you don’t get to touch me”. Having been censored by and grown out of a contextual background provides a uniquely strong identity that is so much more than just sexual. She is objectified while looking like an item on display but, as she lays in her power, her nakedness is not about the audience. She transforms the cool, chaotic eyes wanting and demanding of her into smooth, well blended indifference that defines her external self.

Pressure Makes Diamonds

Pressure Makes Diamonds

"Pressure Makes Diamonds" Life, just like the layers in this painting, is the culmination of experiences as we learn from each one, build on each one, and create something new through the process of evolution. Pressure Makes Diamonds moves from an initial layer of grays and blacks into color, adding dimension and brightness. The artistic marks used incorporate both trauma and whimsy - the best and the worst that make us complex, dynamic and tough beings.
